We Wouldn’t Fade Away is a multi-screen video installation that explores the evolution of gender norms as the digital develops to become the major source of information. The digital helps us accept more while not rejecting the past.
We Wouldn’t Fade Away imagines a scenario in which long-lasting icons in Western pop culture, including Barbie, vampire Carmilla, and Zombie, are invited to a social media channel to discuss the gender issues among humans at the time when they were first created, a time before the advent of social media. They also share their perspectives on the ongoing evolution of gender norms as “others” who are products but never members of humans.
As the digital develops, their images never fade. Instead, they evolve and persist, serving as buoys in the boundless digital ocean that lead us to trace the past and project the future.
